Economic Development

Koehler_in_DCThe current economic climate is a serious issue that affects all McHenry County residents. The County must balance declining revenues while maintaining a strong commitment to infrastructure, economic development, and the protection of its environmental resources and unique geological features. It is imperative, due to the economic conditions today, that we direct efforts to the retention of existing business while looking for opportunities to attract new business. We need to put people back to work and compete with the State of Wisconsin and other surrounding counties to make McHenry County the most desirable place to live, work, and raise a family.

Environmental Conservation

Whereas the 2020 plan, in my opinion, lacked the balance that would allow McHenry County to continue to thrive, the 2030 proposal strikes a good balance between conservation and future economic development. The preservation of McHenry County’s character, culture and heritage is a legacy to future generations that this and future county boards must protect. To that end, the 2030 plan is based on an assumption that 90% of future development will occur within municipalities. The foundation of the 2030 plan provides protection of historic areas, natural areas, and the preservation of groundwater and farmland, but it also includes provisions for new citizens, new jobs, and adequate infrastructure. Sustainable growth isn’t an option; it’s a necessity. The current 2030 proposal would require the preservation of open space, the protection of our groundwater resources, while still allowing for sensible growth. It is economic vitality that will allow us all to enjoy and protect farmland, open space, and a sustainable supply of good water for future generations.

Financial Accountability

I have served on the McHenry County Board as a District 2 elected official since 2000 and as the Chairman of the McHenry County Board since December of 2004. During this time I have insisted on a balanced budget every year. Under my leadership, cash reserves are now available for emergencies. In addition to building these cash reserves, which are incredibly important in this difficult economic climate, the county portion of your tax bill has decreased in three of the last five years. The solid financial footing McHenry County enjoys is rare in Illinois, and McHenry County serves as a model of good governance that other counties strive to emulate.

Transportation

As McHenry County continues to grow, our transportation needs also grow. As a member and leader of the County Board, I have successfully secured more than $300 million in State and Federal dollars for road improvements. Recent projects include the widening of Algonquin Road from Route 31 to Route 47 and the widening of Route 47.  Upcoming transportation improvements that will help ease traffic congestion and improve safety on our roads include the construction of the Algonquin Bypass and the widening of Rakow Road. Obtaining funding for these critical projects and others is the result of a solid working relationship that exists with key decision-makers in Springfield and Washington, D.C. If re-elected, I intend to continue fostering those relationships so that McHenry County remains a priority when funding for road projects becomes available.
